A 38-year-old surfer from South Carolina came off his board in a wave shortly before 8 a.m. near a jetty in New Smyrna Beach. A shark bit him on the top right side of his cheek between his ear and eye. He was taken to a hospital and released a few hours later; his condition was not known.

This record is kept by NSB Watch, a watchmaker on this beach. One of its dive watches is named the Shark Bite.
