Why here, and nowhere else
A statistic built out of geography, not danger.
Ponce de Leon Inlet flushes bait fish into a shallow, churned-up sandbar. Blacktip and spinner sharks follow the bait. Visibility drops to inches. And into that same water go thousands of surfers, every single day of the year.
The result is a very high number of very small injuries: a hand or foot mistaken for a fleeing fish, a single quick bite, and a shark that is gone before it registers what it did. Nearly all of them are treated and released the same day.
